Photo by Robbie Shone @shonephoto / This is the unassuming entrance of Veryovkina, the deepest known cave on Earth. We see the surface topography at 2,300m (7,545ft), high up in the Western Caucasus mountains, close to the the Black Sea. The expedition leader, the late Pavel Demidov, is pictured here at the head of the entrance pitch. In the background, the lights of base camp are just visible, as several team members finish off their preparations for two weeks down in the cave.
