Several Trump administration officials have announced that they are resigning after a mob of Trump supporters stormed the U.S. Capitol on Wednesday.

Among the officials are Elaine Chao, the secretary of transportation; Mick Mulvaney, President Trump’s special envoy to Northern Ireland and former acting chief of staff; and Stephanie Grisham, chief of staff to Melania Trump.

Chao — who is married to Senator Mitch McConnell, the Republican leader — is the first cabinet official to join the exodus, announcing her resignation on Twitter. But these resignations are largely symbolic, given that most would have been out of jobs with the change of administration anyway.

In the hours after Trump took to social media on Wednesday to openly condone the violence at the Capitol, he found himself increasingly isolated at the White House. Grisham, a former White House press secretary, submitted her resignation after the violent protests. So did Sarah Matthews, a deputy press secretary. Matthew Pottinger, the president’s deputy national security adviser, stepped down as well, a person familiar with his decision said Thursday.

Mulvaney said he anticipated there would be more resignations. “Those who choose to stay, and I have talked with some of them, are choosing to stay because they’re worried the president might put someone worse in,” he said.
