A pro-Trump mob stormed the U.S. Capitol on Wednesday, halting Congress’s counting of the electoral votes to confirm President-elect Joe Biden’s victory. The police evacuated lawmakers from the building in a scene of violence, chaos and disruption that shook the core of American democracy. While members of the House and Senate were locked inside their chambers, the mob roamed the halls of the Capitol, taking photos and breaking into offices. The unrest continued even as President Trump asked for protesters to remain peaceful, and Vice President Mike Pence asked for the group to disperse.

Here’s the latest:
President-elect Biden delivered remarks in Wilmington, Del., urging peace. “At this hour, our democracy’s under unprecedented assault,” he said.

The Army activated the entire D.C. National Guard, 1,100 troops, an Army official said Wednesday, and Virginia’s governor dispatched members of the Virginia Guard along with 200 Virginia State Troopers to quell the violence in the nation’s capital.

The storming of Capitol Hill was organized on social media, where calls for violence against members of Congress and for pro-Trump movements to retake the Capitol building have been circulating online for months.

An explosive device was found at the headquarters of the Republican National Committee, and a suspicious package prompted the evacuation of the nearby Democratic National Committee headquarters.

After an angry speech at the National Mall on Wednesday morning, Trump avoided appearing again publicly, instead posting a video to Twitter telling his supporters to go home. He spent a large portion of the video falsely claiming that the election was fraudulent.
