This account also celebrates life for the living. It’s a shame that in every phase of black art usually the first 10 years of its development never gets properly documented (no gospel in early 1900s footage, no blues footage films, barely any woodshed bebop footage in 40s on film, early doo wop, & the same for hip hop (as far as video is concerned)

Some could mutter “well this is kinda basic what’s the big idea?” the idea is all that modern djs do now & what we take for granted had to start somewhere.

(Quick lesson: Kool Herc was the soundking best speakers at any party, Afrika Bam was the selector king could find the funkiest part of any obscure album & make it work, & the younger brother of Flash’s partner Mean Gene otherwise know as Grand Wizzard Theodore introduced the zigga zigga zigga scratching to the conversation at the ripe age of 13 (he also pioneered the art of “needle dropping” a skill very few have)

I’ll say Flash was the scientist of the initial forefathers —-the mixers we use now where not created in the 70s so the engineer in him had to invent the technology that would allow him to listen to a record while the other played for the party. Not to mention most DJs didn’t have a sense of rhythm so he pioneered the idea of a continuous pulse for a dj set—-before him songs would end awkward & start awkward so that continuous flow of a Kool & The Gang song playing at the same time a T-Connection is playing was REVOLUTIONARY—-he took his protege’s (Theo) scratching idea to the next level: extending drum part so smooth that instead of just making announcements (“Pam your mom is looking for you”/“don’t forget next Sunday we will be at..”) his guys would spit intricate rhymes (“his guys” Cowboy invented the phrase “hip hop”, & Melly Mel was the 1st to call himself an MC. But it took ALOT of patience & ingenuity to make djn the breeze it is now. Back then you had to weigh your own needles w coins, get smooth felt traction so you wouldn’t damage the belt drive, a lot of elements that now come super easy. This was a tutorial he gave back in 83 when NOONE considered this art, relevant, or cool (no one who was in the gatekeeper position) — @djflash4eva HBD!!
