Photo by @jimrichardsonng / If you were longing for a wee Scottish village tucked away on the coast, that would pretty well describe Pennan. Just one street but made famous in the 1980s as the site of the cult movie “Local Hero.” This tale of a Houston oil exec sent to buy out a little town to be made into an oil shipping station captured many hearts (mine included) because he falls in love with the place. His rapture came to life in phone calls back to Texas from the iconic red phone booth by the shore. It’s still there, still working, and people around the world still call it hoping someone in Pennan will pick it up and give them their Scotland fix. (I carry the number in my contacts.) Small villages like Pennan no longer support much fishing, being largely turned over to second homes. For more Scotland follow @JimRichardsonNG.
