I photographed women of the Kayapo people, an indigenous group in the Brazilian Amazon, during a ceremony to bestow a “beautiful” name on a child. For this important occasion everybody must be painted and adorned.

The ceremony lasted for several days and nights, culminating in the final all-night ritual of dancing and singing.

I was fascinated by these women's creativity and the inventive, elaborate use of only two colors. Contrary to the concealing and augmenting purposes of make-up employed in Western cultures, in which everyone strives to achieve a narrow ideal of glamorized beauty, these women use face paint to indicate their stage of life, place in the community, and role in the ceremony and to honor hardships endured, while also expressing personal style and flair.
