Introducing Recultured, a new podcast miniseries from The Japan Times that looks back at the year in Japanese pop culture, and how the COVID-19 pandemic impacted and ultimately changed it. The country entered 2020 with Olympic glory on its mind, and the entertainment industry hoped to get in on it too. But COVID-19 derailed those dreams, forcing people across the nation to isolate at home. Pop culture pivoted to this stay-at-home reality, and continued to adjust as the country tried to find a “new normal.” As the year ended, anime offered a glimmer of hope, while pop culture at large emerged in new, outward looking forms.
