I would finish my shift teaching English at 9 pm and walk along the river from Sengawa to catch the train home from Seijo. The Discman soundtrack for this stroll was Lou Reed, Courtney Love, the Pixies, and The White Stripes, all artists playing at what would be my first ever Fuji Rock that year. The route went past a skate park and sports fields with a couple of houses. It was seemingly the suburban idyll. I noticed there was always a policeman standing guard outside one home, but being close to the Aum cult's former headquarters and some prominent politicians, a police presence wasn't a huge deal. Months later, however, I recognized the house during a TV appeal. It was the scene of one of Japan's most terrible and as yet unsolved crimes.   On the night of December 30th, 2000, someone had entered this home and violently murdered 44-year-old Mikio Miyazawa, his 41-year-old wife Yasuko, and their children, 8-year-old Niina and 6-year-old Rei. Despite the assailant leaving behind an extraordinary amount of evidence, he has never been identified. Forensic science has progressed over the years, revealing more and more about the killer. You can spend hours on forums going through the evidence and theories about this tragedy.   I included this photo in my book as autobiographical as much as for documentary purposes. The story demolishes the myth of suburban Japan and the family home as being places of safety. The evening I got home from Fuji Rock that year, I heard the news a friend had died suddenly in circumstances I have never quite understood. I've somehow formed an emotional attachment between memories of my 23-year-old self and the unimaginable tragedy that happened at this place just a few years before.
