Hop on a local train between Kyoto and Osaka, and passing through Hankyu Minami-Ibaraki station, you will catch a glimpse of 'Sun Child' by artist Kenji Yanobe. 'Sun Child' was birthed as a symbol of hope and perseverance following the 3.11 earthquake/tsunami/nuclear disasters (when you write the three next to each other, you realize the enormity of what happened that day.) Growing up not far from this area in Osaka, as a child, Yanobe played amongst the dismantled remains of the Osaka Expo '70, an experience that formed his often dystopian interest in 'survival in modern society.'
I hung around for hours here, waiting for it to get dark and for the statue to light up, but it didn't.
