We returned recently and bought a few pieces, all mermaid themed, including one by Dolores herself . We also met  their new chihuahua. It was a good day  . (Remembering the teacher Dolores Porras Oaxaca State Museum of Popular Art San Bartolo Coyotepec, Oaxaca) Famous throughout the world, Dolores Porras was a "tireless promoter of Oaxacan culture through her masterful art in pottery." Born in Santa Maria Atzompa in 1937, Dolores began her work as a potter at the age of 13 alongside her father and adoptive mother.  At the beginning of the 80's, Dolores and her husband Alfredo Regino Ramírez, decided to put into practice a new technique to produce colored ceramics, which not only revolutionized their work but all the ceramics of Atzompa. Little by little, he developed a translucent white enamel that makes his pieces almost iridescent, on top he put details in striking colors such as orange, blue, green and yellow.  Dolores built each piece by hand and frequently decorated them with her now famous braided strips, mermaids, flowers, and iguanas to finish them off with her distinctive enamels.  What made her work unique was her use of colorful decoration and imagery — ranging from flowers to iguanas, fish, mermaids, and more. She was an artesana and artista and her original work drew attention from different parts of Mexico and around the world.
