Guide Ellen Sussman explores a painting of the construction of the original Penn Station by George Bellows. This landmark was eventually demolished in 1963 to make way for Madison Square Garden and the Penn Station we know today. As a result of the outrage over the destruction of that building, the Landmark Preservation Commission was created. New York remains a palimpsest of new and old buildings and landmarks.
