Who's already sent out their holiday cards? (Who else is...not there? 🤭)
In 1937, William Grant Still sent this holiday card to Frank H. Bolner. It's now in the collection of our @nmaahc.
Still was known as the "Dean of African American Composers," and was the first African American composer to have a symphony performed by a professional American orchestra (his Symphony No. 1 "Afro-American" in 1930) or an opera performed by a major company ("Troubled Island" in 1949).
In addition to works for orchestra and opera, Still wrote film scores and set poetry by Harlem Renaissance writers like Countee Cullen and Langston Hughes.
The card says "Lenox Avenue and I wish you a happy new year"—Lenox Avenue (now co-named Malcolm X Boulevard) was central to the Harlem Renaissance. #APeoplesJourney
