After finding calm caring for houseplants, Yuki Kawae (@yukikawae) built small Zen sand gardens in his apartment. For the product designer, it’s a meditative practice to cope with everyday stresses and anxieties that he started before 2020’s pandemic.
His close-up ASMR videos feature Yuki raking sand into intricate geometric designs, exploring patterns inspired by ocean waves, the moon, Saturn’s rings and more, and offering moments of calm to his audience.
“The circle is edgeless, quite a calming shape. My practice intention is to create a perfect geometry, but I am not a computer. I am a human so it will never be perfect and that is OK. It actually is even better, since I think that small irregularity makes it more relatable and beautiful.
My approach is that this is temporary. Every pattern gets erased, so I don’t get attached to any of them. I did this practice, because it brought me clear mindedness from all the noise. But I never thought it could help others as well in a similar way.”
