Photo by @brianskerry / 2005 / A thresher shark in a gill net in Mexico’s Gulf of California (Sea of Cortez). Each year more than 100 million sharks are killed globally, often for their fins, used in shark fin soup. I made this picture over a decade ago, while working on a @ナショナルジオグラフィック story about commercial overfishing. Although I had made other photos of sharks being caught and processed, I wasn’t sure these images would resonate with readers. But when I swam along this gill net and framed the scene through my camera’s viewfinder, it struck me as a crucifixion, and I hoped the photo would create empathy for the plight of sharks. As predators, sharks play a vital role in keeping ocean ecosystems healthy.

Our photographers have captured the era’s most important stories—from war and human tragedies to scientific breakthroughs and species saved from the brink of extinction. This image was a selection in Nat Geo’s 21 most compelling images of the 21st century. Check out our link in bio to see the rest.
