Video by @bertiegregory / A pod of short-beaked common dolphins buzz past me, 30 miles off the coast of Wales. This species is highly social and is often seen in massive pods, hundreds strong. They can swim at 30 mph (50 kph), so having that first dolphin blast pass and then whip around for another look was very exciting! The seas around the U.K. have some extraordinary wildlife, but they should have more. Lockdown has not been good for them either. In the first six months of 2020, supertrawlers doubled their time fishing in U.K. protected waters than in the whole of last year. These massive ships are currently legal in the U.K., including within many of our marine protected areas. Hopefully soon they'll be unable to fish in protected waters—and the spectacular wildlife will be given more of a chance to bounce back.

On a related note, I should point out that jumping in to swim with dolphins is illegal in the U.K. In this case, I was in the water with a blue shark, with the boat's engine off, when this pod came over to investigate.
