By high school, my track coach crushed my dreams by moving me up to the mid-distances -- the 400m, then the 800m, then the mile. I was more competitive in those events. But I swore to myself that I’d NEVER be a long distance runner (those races are boring, right?). 15 years later, who would’ve thought I’d be an ultra trail runner training for my first 100-miler! There aren’t really enough words to describe the effect that trail running now has on me. It’s freedom. It’s joy. It’s tough. It hurts. It heals. It inspires. And especially during times like these, there’s nothing more grounding than lacing up, getting outdoors, and onto a trail. But what brings me even more joy is that I get to offer some of those same awe-inspiring and resilience-building moments to youth here in San Diego. Our organization @OutdoorOutreach introduces youth to the transformative power of the outdoors, promoting their confidence, resilience, and ability to explore their world in new ways. At Outdoor Outreach we’re building access to, and equity in, the outdoors for communities who have often been excluded from many of the outdoor spaces that we program in. I’m incredibly grateful for our team that makes that work possible and that show up daily for our awesome kids.” - Lesford Duncan (@LesfordDuncan), Senior Director of Programs @OutdoorOutreach. 📸 @EhLer_Tha Join Lesford next week (12/9 at 5pm PST) for a virtual panel discussing Outdoor Outreach’s mission and ways we can be advocates for access to the outdoors.
