Aujourd’hui, focus sur le Saint Christophe de Francesco di Giorgio Martini (1488-1490), actuellement présenté dans l’exposition « Le Corps et l’Âme ». 🔎 - 🛶 Selon la tradition chrétienne, le géant Christophe aurait vécu au IIIe siècle en Asie Mineure. Mettant sa force au service des plus faibles en leur faisant traverser un fleuve, il aide un jour un enfant en le prenant sur ses épaules. Ce dernier se révèle être le Christ. En qualité de passeur, il est représenté avec la perche utilisée durant ses traversées avec les voyageurs, dont il est devenu le patron. - 🔎L’œuvre provient du retable réalisé pour la chapelle d’Antonio Bichi dans l’église Sant’Agostino de Sienne. Vraisemblablement placé au centre, à l’avant de l’autel, ce Saint Christophe côtoyait autrefois les panneaux peints de Luca Signorelli. L’œuvre devait ainsi participer à un ensemble raffiné, caractérisé par la diversité de ses matériaux, mais aussi par la richesse de couleurs qu’assuraient les polychromies et les dorures. - - - - 🌎 Let’s inspect the works of the museum with #LouvreDetails! Offering his strength to the weakest by making them cross a river, he helped a child one day by taking him on his shoulders. The latter turns out to be the Christ. As a bargeman, he is represented with the pole used during his crossings with travellers, of whom he became the patron. - 🔎 The work comes from the altarpiece made for Antonio Bichi's chapel in the church of Sant'Agostino in Siena. Presumably placed in the center, at the front of the altar, this Saint Christopher once stood next to the painted panels by Luca Signorelli.
