But when photographing animals, both above and below the ocean's surface, you are operating in the unknown–no one can predict nature. Fortunately, once this mother and calf (affectionately named Ariel by the crew) settled in for an hour-long sleep, my ability (or inability) to free dive into position became the only limiting factor.
