Today, she reflects on this 19th-century Mi’ kmaq lidded box: "With its contrasting zigzag pattern, bird imagery, and references to light and dark, this Mi’ kmaq birchbark box exemplifies 19th-century Native American quill art. An intricate textile method of porcupine or bird quills, plant roots, and natural plant dyes, quill art is aesthetically unique to Woodlands and Plains Indigenous communities in Canada and the United States. Dating back centuries, quill compositions involve light, color, and elaborate patterns. Prior to European colonization, quills were used to adorn tanned hides for clothing, accessories, and utilitarian items. Under settler influences and shifting economies, quill art extended to decorative and tourist items including boxes, picture frames, and miniature furniture items for collection and display."⁣ 🎨 Unknown Mi’ kmaq maker.
