I made this piece as 2009 Year of the Tiger card for a company in Tokyo. But they thought it’s too dark and depressing for New Year greeting. They decided not to use it. Certainly, at that time, I was going through my identity crisis in the remote jungle of Hawaii. Well, unprofessional veracity as commercial illustrator indeed.

Along with my life circumstances, especially after I left Tokyo in the late ‘90s, I had been having a hard time working “cool” “fun” “cute” commercial illustrations to please clients and Japanese mass audiences. I needed to heal myself and find myself with drawing. Therefore my works became more and more abstract because I started to work on my emotions and mystery of LIFE that cannot be “illustrated” or explained.

Things have changed and I have changed. I enjoy revisiting my old works now, to find these illustrations are still very personal, even for the clients, for better or worse.

Since I was a little girl I have always liked to draw invisible things to make visible. With my drawings I needed to make my imagination real to protect my sacred realm from adult insanity.

I started illustration archive account that introduces my old illustration works from early’90s with anecdotes in Japanese.

この絵は2009年寅年の年賀状として東京の某社のために描いたものですが「暗すぎて年賀状には不向き」と却下されました。確かにその頃のわたしはハワイの密林で翻弄と悶々を繰り返し、ついに自己喪失に陥っていたのでそういう自分が出ちゃったんでしょう。あーあ。コマーシャルイラストレーターのプロとしては失格ですね。

ことごとく一身上の都合により、イラストレーター下條ユリは90年代後半から徐々に、大勢の人が喜ぶ流行りのオシャレで楽しくかわいい絵、いわゆる「コマーシャルイラストレーション」が描けなくなってしまいました。自分の心を癒すため、そして何より自分を知るために、言葉にできない感情、LIFEの不思議を描くために、どんどん絵は「説明なし」の抽象画になっていきました。

あれから世の中も、自分も変わりました。今では昔の絵をまた違う気持ちで見れるようになったのかもしれません。クライアントさんからの依頼に、良くも悪くも自分が出ちゃってる昔のイラストレーション仕事に懐かしく胸がキュンとします。

子どもの頃から見えないものを絵で見える様にするのが好きでした。絵を描いて、自分のイマジネーションを現実にして、狂った大人たちの世界から子供としての自分の聖域を守る術を知っていました。

1990年頃からの仕事をいろいろな逸話を織り混ぜ紹介してゆくイラストレーション・アーカイブ専用のアカウントを作りました。
