Photo by Cesar Rodriguez @cesar_rodriguezb / Documenting this year’s Day of the Dead in Mexico during the COVID-19 pandemic was something like never before. There were empty and gray cemeteries, without the aromas of marigolds and incense, without mariachis or ”Norteños.” La Catrina (the death) was alone in her domain and the very same pandemic seemed to enlarge her, to make her gigantic.

Ironically, when José Guadalupe Posada, creator of La Catrina, died in Tepito, he died alone and forgotten, his remains were forgotten in a common grave.

“Death, as José Guadalupe Posada taught us, is the art of passing away to a better life,” said writer Juan Villoro.

Taken on assignment for @ナショナルジオグラフィック and @icrc.
