There’s been various owners but this place dates all the way back to 1847. It was a grocery store till 1863, became a saloon, then a grocery store and finally a saloon once again in 1867. It’s served as a gathering place for artists during the transitions of Manhattan’s SoHo neighborhood from a manufacturing area to an arts community. It was also a speakeasy during the Prohibition days from 1920-1933. It wasn’t until early 1900’s that the name became Fanelli Cafe (named after the new owner Michael Fanelli). In 1982, the Noe family purchased the cafe and kept the name until today. It was fun to read a little history about this cafe. When I read history of places, areas, I often wonder what it was really like during those days.
