Photo by @carltonward / A Florida black bear crosses beneath a barbed wire fence to follow a game trail between Big Cypress National Preserve and Alligator Ron Bergeron’s Green Glades West Ranch. The purpose of selecting this site for a camera trap for our @PathofthePanther project with @InsideNatGeo is not to show a division, but rather that the adjacent properties serve as one connected habitat for wide-ranging wildlife. A cattle ranch and a national preserve working together shows the value of the Florida Wildlife Corridor and the need to conserve a connected network of public land from the Everglades to North Florida and beyond. Fences like these keep the cows in but do not form functional barriers for bears, panthers, deer, and other Florida wildlife. But to make crossing a bit easier, the Bergeron ranch has elevated the bottom strand along the entire length of his fence with Big Cypress. // @PathofthePanther is a #LastWildPlaces Partnership with @InsideNatGeo to inspire protection of the Florida Wildlife Corridor. @FL_WildCorridor #bear @BigCypressNPS @bergeronevergladesfoundation #KeepFLWild
