I get asked this question a lot
DEADLIFT: yes, you do use your glutes but you are also using a lot of your lats and back muscles to retract and stabilize when performing the exercise. You are hinging here no dropping into a squat. Your back is flat however you are leaning more forward. The weight is also distributed differently.
SQUAT: you are using your glutes and quads. You are dropping butt and pushing your hips back, keeping your chest up and head up.
