On October 31, 1989, 31 years ago today, over 100 members of ACT UP and Housing Works demonstrated at Trump Tower to draw attention to the growing crisis of homelessness among people with AIDS.
.
As OutWeek explained, “Donald Trump was targeted to dramatize the disparity between government policy which allowed Trump to pick up a whopping 6.2 million dollar tax abatement for the building, and the contrasting governmental inaction which allows an almost limitless supply of city owned property to remain vacant and unrenovated while the population of homeless people with AIDS continues to grow.”
.
As police violently corralled demonstrators outside, about 30 activists slipped inside Trump Tower’s “expansively gaudy atrium,” where “a weird game of cat and mouse” took place until, finally, “a shower of leaflets poured down through the ten-story atrium,” at which point security guards, “in mass confusion, cornered whomever they could nab.”
.
Among the day’s most memorable scenes found Ronny Viggiani, dressed as Dorothy from “The Wizard of Oz,” navigating Trump Tower’s dramatic escalators to avoid police. As Viggiani made his way down “the escalator connecting the lobby with the atrium’s first floor”—the same escalator Trump famously descended to announce his presidential campaign in 2015—security guards cut off power. While other activists scattered, Viggiani stood perfectly still, as guards yelled for him to walk down the remaining steps. With tension growing, Viggiani shouted, “you’ve got to turn it back on! I can’t walk in these heels!”
.
“For a brief moment,” OutWeek continued, “the scene froze as Dorothy stood defiantly while the guard struggled desperately to turn the key to start the escalator. Finally, the switch turned, Dorothy moved effortlessly down the mechanical staircase, evoking a strangely grand scene worthy of a Hollywood soundstage, all as ACT UPers cheered wildly.” #HavePrideInHist
