Photo by Christopher Gregory-Rivera @cgregoryphoto / The Cruz Rodriguez family is photographed at friend Barbara Ortiz’s house, in Kissimmee, Florida. From left: Juan Luis, Camila, Aida, and Loise. The family left Puerto Rico after Hurricane Maria and have faced an uphill battle to gain a footing in the states. Yet they've found a community of supportive fellow Puerto Ricans, like Barbara.

When asked if he had faith in the candidates' ability to deliver on campaign promises, Juan Luis said, “We have to see to believe.” Aida answered, “You are talking to a marriage that went through a hurricane, earthquakes, is going through COVID, that came to Florida, and all of a sudden our daughters faced serious health issues—we are survivors. Don’t play me. Don’t talk pretty—act.”

Later in our conversation, she told me, “I want change, I don’t want a circus. I want somebody who will talk to me with integrity.”

Kissimmee and the surrounding area are Latino strongholds in Orlando. The mostly Puerto Rican population saw a sizable bump after roughly 50,000 people fled the aftermath of Hurricane Maria in 2017 and settled in the Orlando area—which had already counted upwards of 380,000 Puerto Ricans.

Anecdotal evidence suggests that although the Puerto Rican community has largely voted Democratic, a segment of the population is "purpling" from the votes of an older generation of migrants with more conservative and religious values. Some consider the Latino vote in Florida to be one of the main deciding factors in toss-up counties and regions in this election.
