#DidYouKnow: In her zoomorphic form, Bastet, a powerful goddess of Lower Egypt, was represented as a cat, and cats were considered sacred to her. Bastet was known to be protective and could bring about great prosperity.

During the first millennium BC, animals associated with gods were specially raised in temple precincts and were considered manifestations of those gods.

This cat rests on a hollow rectangular box, which would have originally held an animal mummy. Mummy boxes like these were donated and placed in catacombs at temple sites to ensure the animal's eternal life.
