Depicting a salon that specializes in hair braiding for African American women, Amina (2017) glows with fluorescent light, which illuminates a window display of posters advertising women’s hair styles. Although Amina does not feature any actual people, it exemplifies Casteel’s interest in small businesses as places where personal rituals are performed outside the home, in public space—here, a salon for women, who up until this point had not been Casteel’s primary subjects.
