I frequently hear music in the heart of noise.
—George Gershwin
Surrounding Columbia University, the bustling Morningside Heights neighborhood on New York’s Upper West Side is an ideal home for our newest cafe—which also happens to be our 100th. It’s the kind of neighborhood that feels familiar. (Maybe it is for some of us: the opening credits of Seinfeld features the real-life Tom’s Restaurant located just a few blocks south of our cafe.) And yet, as the place where George Gershwin penned “Rhapsody in Blue” and FM radio got its start, there’s an air of possibility too.
We’re drawn to the beech millwork in this cafe, which makes the long communal table, cube-shaped stools, and tabletops light on the eye long before the sun creeps above the cityscape to shine through the cafe’s windows. Marmorino stucco, a type of Venetian plaster around since ancient Roman times, gives a rough hand-worked texture to vertical surfaces.
When it opens tomorrow, stop by for a pour over and wish our team congratulations. Don’t forget your mask! 💙 📸
