Americans are seemingly passionate about democracy. Many would die for it. And yet definitions of democracy vary widely. For over a decade I have primarily worked as a conflict photographer, covering war, revolutions, and conflict overseas. But four years ago, I started a journey at home—to see what people in the United States think democracy means in their own lives...or if they see it at all. Three of us (with writer Rebecca Sanchez @rbeckslee and videographer/educator Lorraine Ustaris @lorraineustar) have traveled the U.S. to listen, learn, and document democracy on a grassroots level. When I began this project I was curious about the deep divide between the left and the right, a heavily politicized division. But what we found was a greater divide that affects how people experience or see their democracy, their voice, their power; the divide between the haves and have-nots. It is income inequality that creates the democracy divide in the U.S. This project is also open for students to contribute their own ideas. For more information, check out @nationalwritingproject.
