About 8,000 5th grade students from over a hundred Utah schools came together in red, white, and blue to form the American flag, as seen in the background (2017). Americans are seemingly passionate about democracy. Many would die for it. And yet definitions of democracy vary widely. For over a decade I have primarily worked as a conflict photographer, covering war, revolutions, and conflict overseas. But four years ago, I started a journey at home—to see what people in the United States think democracy means in their own lives...or if they see it at all. Three of us (with writer Rebecca Sanchez @rbeckslee and videographer/educator Lorraine Ustaris @lorraineustar) have traveled the U.S. to listen, learn, and document democracy on a grassroots level. When I began this project I was curious about the deep divide between the left and the right, a heavily politicized division. But what we found was a greater divide that affects how people experience or see their democracy, their voice, their power; the divide between the haves and have-nots. It is income inequality that creates the democracy divide in the U.S. This project is also open for students to contribute their own ideas. For more information, check out @nationalwritingproject.
