Training time! Our black-and white lemurs (Aloke + Wiley) and ring-tailed lemurs (Tom Petty, Southside Johnny, Bowie and Birch) learn behaviors that enable keepers to monitor their health and agility. If they choose to participate, they receive their favorite treat, raisins, as a reward.

In this video, Aloke and Wiley “hang” at their keeper’s cue, which demonstrates a natural behavior they use to get hard-to-reach flowers and fruits. Ring-tailed lemurs have a high vertical jump, which keepers can measure with a yard stick. When keepers give the cue “tail,” the lemurs hold their tails; this helps the primate team obtain accurate weights. Lemurs are also trained to voluntarily enter a crate and shut the door. This is helpful in the event the lemurs are not feeling well and need to be quickly transported to the vet hospital.

The illegal pet trade is one of the major threats to lemur populations in Madagascar. Though lemurs are incredibly cute, they live in complex social groups that provide social interaction and teach them how to be lemurs. When people buy lemurs as pets, they take them from their families, often resulting in aggression and other psychological issues.

The good news is that you can help! Do not consider buying a lemur as a pet, and don't share photos or videos of people treating lemurs as pets. Help spread the word that lemurs don’t make good pets and belong with other lemurs!
