“In Chinese tradition, the combination of cranes and gibbons symbolizes long-life, while scenes of affection, respect, sharing, and collaboration represent the ideals of family harmony and social order. Here the intention may be to wish someone a long life and happy home,” says Stephen Allee, associate curator of Chinese painting.

[View from right to left] At right, two cranes wing down from the sky, where a troop of eighteen gibbons has dispersed among the trees of a colorful forested landscape. Some pairs sit quietly together or hand things between them; an older gibbon grooms three young ones for fleas; a nursing mother and a younger ape stretch down holding hands to snatch a crab from the water.

Happy #InternationalGibbonDay from #FreerSackler and @スミソニアン国立動物園! Head over to the Zoo’s channels to learn facts about gibbons, from how our primate keepers provide enrichment and training to how these creatures build families and communities.
