@mrcheckpoint_ thank you for posting this. I realize that the comments will immediately say, “he got what he deserved”... not true. A situation like this can be resolved peacefully, with de-escalation tactics, to prevent anyone (officers included) from getting hurt.
It’s incidents like THIS that come to mind when we talk about defunding the police and taking that money to put it towards teams of mental health and substance abuse experts, who would arrive on site to attempt to calm the person down. Even something as simple as not arriving with sirens can help to make a situation less tense and improve the outcome for everyone involved.

Police are not mental health specialists. They are not medics. We cannot expect them to be. So, it’s time for some REAL change.

**i would also like to say that after talking to some in the fields of mental health, I want to try and work on getting the idea out there and terminology that “mental health crisis” does NOT equal violence. Just because someone is in the midst of an episode does not automatically mean they are a danger to others. Sometimes, yes. But Often, they are more afraid than anything and don’t have the capacity to verbalize that.
