As an immigrant - born in Singapore, I traveled from Nepal, to India, London, Australia - I came to America in pursuit of the American Dream: a beacon of hope where one’s wildest ambitions would come true. The promise of America was that of endless possibilities; a melting pot that is colourful, multicultural, and beautiful. Over the years living here, I have been confronted with the reality of who that Dream serves, how many it leaves behind and who gets to be American. These questions permeate the air of today's national discussion and our leadership’s divisive rhetoric, not to mention my own introspective journey. A year ago, as I conceived the 10th anniversary collection of my brand, I sought to celebrate many faces of America 20 years after moving here. I recall sitting in a business meeting and discussing my desire to redefine the Americana aesthetic. I was met with a pointed “well, you don't look American so how can you define what America is?” It was clear what they meant. This is all deeply personal to me. Though my roots live with my family in Nepal, this country is my home. America is where my heart is. I'm an American. As we fight for change, we must confront all aspects of our history and take ownership of our past while forging a new legacy. Therefore, the collection was a celebration of hope, courage, and progress towards a true American Dream that promotes equality and liberation for all - one that unifies us.
