American Dream = Segregated Nightmare?
Peachland, NC 2020

For the Spring 2020 collection, my show explored the question “who gets to be American?” I was inspired by the TIME magazine cover created by @forfreedoms. Since that very poignant and emotional show, this is a question I have continued to confront in order to make sense of the deep divisions and immeasurable suffering in this country.

I am an immigrant, an entrepreneur, a designer, a gay man, an activist, a son, a brother, and a proud uncle. I am a collection of all of these things. To me, this confluence of individuality is the truest form of the American identity.

I came to this country in pursuit of the American Dream; the idea that an outsider and misfit like me could realise their wildest ambitions. America represented a land of endless possibilities. I got my American Dream, however this is not the case for many others. For far too long, this country has left behind and exploited its Black, Brown, Asian, Indigenous, LGBTQ+, and undocumented family in pursuit of an ideal that has left us divided and wounded.

Our rallying cries for racial justice continue to hang in the air and the Black Lives Matter movement sweeps across the country (and the world). We continue to say the names of Breonna Taylor and George Floyd. We march. It clear to us all that equality for one group does not lead to true liberation for all. We ask: what does the American Dream stand for, and who does it serve?

I am honoured to participate in @forfreedoms 2020 Awakening. To be counted amongst this esteemed group of artists and thought leaders is a dream. For this project, they co-opted billboards to share artist created messages to encourage deep thinking, self reflection, and discourse. My piece “American Dream = Segregated Nightmare?” has the goal of creating dialogue about the oppression of marginalized communities in America due to systemic racism and structural inequities. I hope that as a nation we will continue in our resistance and remember that it is our patriotic duty to challenge the fabric from which this country that we love was weaved.
