Yeah, Japan is known mostly for mediocre beachbreak, but during typhoon season, very special things can happen. Cooga Harada puts up with months of flatness and is always ready for when things get interesting. “This long-lived swell southerly swell came from Typhoon Chan Hom, with the bulk of the size showing from October 8th through the 10th,” explains Surfline’s Director of forecasting Kevin Wallis. “Chan Hom was a medium-size storm that quickly intensified on October 6th-7th as it tracked NW to N. By the 8th the storm slowed down significantly and also began to recurve into the North Pacific, tracking from NE to ENE and also slowly losing strength. This track spared Japan of any truly damaging weather — although it was certainly windy and rainy — and set up offshore wind for certain zones as the swell peaked.”
