One of the wonderful things working at Surfline is engaging in spirited debates with the forecast team. They’re all really smart and slightly nerdy and get in the water daily — exactly what you want in a surf forecaster.

One of our favorite ongoing debates is when seasons actually start. Most of the forecast team is a fan of what’s called “meteorological” seasons, where winter runs from December 1st-February 28th because, well, they’re meteorologists.

The rest of us subscribe to the astronomical seasons, which are tied to the placement of the sun throughout the year — so winter starts on the winter solstice, the shortest day of the year, which usually lands on December 21, and runs through the spring equinox, which usually lands on March 21.

This argument happens every year and has become an ongoing kind of joke.
Fortunately, since we’re all surfers, many based in Southern California, we generally finally all agree that the winter surf season starts when we see solid Black’s and Todos Santos starts to break — all of which happened during last week’s North Pacific swell.
