On the cover of the new issue of Casa Vogue - on newsstands as part of the October issue of Vogue Italia - an artwork by Lydia Blakeley featuring 70-Ton House, a dwelling designed by architecture studio @SpaceCaviar for a family in New York, scheduled for completion in 2021. Situated in the Upstate woodlands, the building is designed to embrace the forest, wrapping itself around the trees existing on the site rather than felling them, normally the first step in the “site clearing” process. The building is also an exploration of new approaches to traditional methods of climate-control and cross-ventilation, as well as the architectural potential of cross-laminated timber, a carbon-positive material that has the potential to significantly reduce architecture’s dependency on widely-used CO2-intensive materials such as concrete.
