He was the first one to greet the New Kid, made you feel welcome, invited you to sit at his lunch table where his activist brilliance was peppered with his easy open laughter, and his gaze which was free of even an ounce of judgement. There are so few people who have that gift—of discernible warmth and kindness, coupled with intellectual brilliance. Did he have plaid pants? I want to say yes. He was the kind of person who wore Cherry red, the kind of red that made you think simultaneously of Summer and Christmas. That’s what he was like, Summer AND Christmas.
