John Akomfrah, CBE is a British artist, writer, film director, screenwriter, theorist and curator, well known for his work with the London-based Black Audio Film Collective, which he co-founded in 1982. He made his début as a director with Handsworth Songs (1986), which examined the 1985 Handsworth riots in Birmingham and London through a charged combination of archive footage, still photos and newsreel.

In this film the artist introduces his workspace and talks about his approach to filmmaking, his interest in archive and documentary, and the importance of history to film and cinema. 📽️
