"More than a few patients at work have asked me why I have such a big smile on my face. I’m just happy a lot, and it’s tied to running. I’m from a sunny, small town called Lompoc in Southern California. That’s where I started running. The paths are scenic, secluded, serene, and sandy, and they hold countless stories that shaped who I am today. I ran in high school and college and the competition is part of why I got really into the sport. It taught me the power of dedication, hard work, and resilience, some of my most valuable life experiences. However, even when I’m not racing -- which is all the time now during COVID – running continues to be an important part of my day.

Running allows me time to reflect. I find joy from many angles in cancer care, and it is one of the reasons I am training to become a radiation oncologist. I want to help people in times of fear and uncertainty, to create and share hope, and to practice daily being the best version of myself. It is a warm environment and reminds me to appreciate everything I have. My patients teach me new things every day, and I process these thoughts when I am running. You are let into a private part of people’s lives and it is an honor to share that part with them. So, I want to bring my best and help others do the same.

On the flip side, running can also be the counterbalance to a hard day. Sometimes there are some sad, heavy situations, or it feels like there is simply too much to do and not enough time in the day to do it. You can’t let the overwhelming emotions come home with you. Running helps me reset every day after work, find my center, and move forward with enhanced clarity. If I don’t know what to do, I put on shoes and things get better. Running is an outlet that gives even the hardest of days a sense of progress and helps me stay motivated!

At the end of the day, running helps me help others. Smiles are contagious, and sharing a smile with a patient is a treasured way to bond."
