Coffee farms can destroy forest habitat and often use harmful pesticides and fertilizers. When forests disappear, migratory songbirds disappear too. Scientists from @smithsonianzoo's Migratory Bird Center created the Bird Friendly certification, using conservation science to combat population and habitat loss. Bird Friendly coffees come from farms using a combination of foliage cover, tree height and biodiversity to provide quality habitat for birds and other wildlife. These coffees are shade-grown, which means the coffee is planted under a canopy of trees, rather than land that has been cleared of all other vegetation. This is a yellow warbler, a species that overwinters in habitats in and around coffee farms, and migrates to North America in the spring and summer.
