Thomas, who was born #onthisday in Columbus, Georgia, spent most of her life in Washington DC, where her family moved in 1907 and where she later attended Howard University. “Hydrangeas Spring Song” is a masterpiece of the museum’s collection, created at the apex of Thomas’s career. Painted when she was eight-five years old and struggling with arthritis, Thomas deployed short, bursts of blue paint to capture the budding energy of springtime and the joy of painting.
