In August of 2017, a neglected, bio-fouled net pen owned by Cooke Aquaculture failed, releasing more than a quarter-million diseased, invasive Atlantic salmon into the waters of Puget Sound. Reflecting the will of Washington citizens, the state legislature voted to end non-native, net-pen farming in the state’s marine waters. However, Cooke announced it could avoid eviction by exploiting a loophole and shifting their livestock from non-native Atlantic salmon to a domesticated version of steelhead. Now there’s a bold new strategy created by @wildfishconservancy and @patagoniaprovisions, and supported by a coalition of tribal, commercial and recreational anglers, food businesses, conservation groups and citizens, to boot Cooke Aquaculture and its pesticides, parasites, pollution and diseased fish from the waters of Puget Sound.
