Traveling to Oregon’s Wallowa Mountains with his 8-year-old daughter for the family’s traditional father-daughter fishing trip, novelist John Larison encountered a locked gate on public land, blocking access to their favorite stream. Gates like these are being erected by landowners at a staggering speed to intentionally lock the public out of public lands. By buying up the private ground—like old mining claims—adjacent to or within public lands, the new owners essentially hijack our public lands—for free. ⠀
