#WorkoftheWeek is this work of optical art by Bridget Riley, which uses popping colour and geometric shapes to trick the eye and explore the nature of perception.

Riley made the painting following a trip to Egypt in 1979, which led her to intensify colours and lines, inspired by ancient Egyptian tomb paintings and the local landscape. The title was given after the painting was finished, and refers to the Greeks who 'made the finest early sculpture - vigorous but simple’.
