This is her first solo exhibition with the gallery in London. Weatherford’s abstract canvases evoke urban and rural environments and investigate the relationship between a painted surface and three-dimensional addenda; she has also sourced inspiration from American abstract painters of the 1950s and 1960s such as Helen Frankenthaler and Kenneth Noland. Since 2012, Weatherford has become especially well known for works in which colored neon tubes are attached to heavy linen panels sponged with Flashe emulsion. Following series inspired by Manhattan, Los Angeles, New York Harbor, and Red Hook in Brooklyn, the "Train Yards" (2016–19) series featured in this exhibition also traces Weatherford’s interest in the poetics of urban transportation. She has described these large canvases—abstracted interpretations of the titular site after dark—as visualizations of “the clanging of bells and whistles and the sound of trains.” Again painted in Flashe on linen, they incorporate white neon tubes that reflect the distinctly American history and aura of their subject.
