The water heals me in ways I cannot explain, it helps me reset and there’s just never anywhere else I’d rather be. But the ocean can also be such a complicated place because we all have such different relationships to it. For some, it represents pleasure and offers a sense of renewal and letting go but for others its a fearful place of extreme pain, haunting trauma and distress or the nuanced complications of experiencing all these sides at once. How can we not only take into account but honour histories of the Middle Passage, segregation, lack of access and the life threatening journeys across the seas that so many still face every day on their quest for a better life, when we, ourselves, enter the water? I don’t have the answers or don’t even know if these questions are answerable but I do think it’s important that we sit with them anyway. I will be donating my fee from this post and splitting it between @blackkidsswim an organisation that provides an increased range of opportunities for Black children by encouraging and teaching them to swim and @refugeerescueteam a grassroots NGO operating skilled search and rescue missions 24 hours a day, to assist those in trouble at sea.
