Originally from Charlotte, North Carolina, #RomareBearden—born #OnThisDay in 1911—spent considerable time in New York throughout his childhood. In 1940 he established his first studio in Harlem and became an active member of both the Harlem Artists Guild and the informal artists' organization, the 306 Group.

Bearden's 1971 six-panel collage "The Block" was made as a tribute to the neighborhood that nurtured both his life and work, capturing a series of small vignettes—simultaneously public and private, secular and spiritual, real and imagined—in its 18-foot span.
